FIA-GTC-TC‘ 76: Austrian “Batman” saves points in Most
Wolfgang Schachinger (A) won the third round of the FIA-GTC-TC’76 for cars up to 1976 in the Autodrom Most (CZ). With his BMW 3.0 CSL Alpina (nicknamed „Batmobile“) he stormed out of the third row in the starting grid immediately into the second position behind pole setter Dr. Wolfgang Stein (D) in his ex-Jörg Obermoser-Ford Escort RS. But Dr. Stein did not manage to finish the first lap. „The cable of the starter broke and caused a short-circuit“, the disappointed German explained. The Ford BDA engine finished its work for the weekend.
Bad luck as well for the two De Tomaso Pantera of Team Witchcraft. The wonderful GTs with the mid engines producing 500 hp and a phenomenal V8 sound, driven by Claus Damgaard and Henrik Lindberg (both DK), finished their second weekend in the FIA series too early. Lindberg’s car lost oil and Damgaard’s car stopped in the first lap after ignition problems. „I think we will need the whole season to get enough experience with the cars and make them reliable“, said Dan Svenson who built up the De Tomasos over winter in four and half months. „We had good support from the De Tomaso factory, Alejandro de Tomaso himself and the De Tomaso Owners Club“. Claus Damgaard, who competes like his team mate Hendrik Lindberg in a Lotus Elan (in FIA-GTC’65) as well, continued: „The maximum power and the torque of the Pantera are unbelievable. The straights become very short“.
In the second position behind the unchallenged leader, series newcomer Thomas Verhoeven had a good start into the FIA-GTC-TC’76. With his Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 2.8 he was second in the qualifying and also became second on the podium. „My only chance was to follow the BMW in respectful distance so I’m happy with the race“, the Porsche driver commentated. The third place went to Kerry Michael (GB) in his Ford Escort TC ahead of Paehr Svensson (S) in the Mini Marcos.
