Rapport 2003 / 06 Nürburgring
6th. Event FIA-GTC-TC’76: 32nd. AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix Nürburgring
Record Starter Field for the First Season
The FIA-GTC-TC’76 presented itself with 24 GT- and Touring Cars built up to 1976 at the 32nd. AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix. This was the largest starter field in this FIA-Championship so far. Pekka Nyström (S) in his Chevrolet Corvette (1972) with the 7,4 litre V8-engine achieved the best time in the Qualifying. But the Scandanavian was only a tiny 0,05 second faster than Ingo Zeitz (D) in a Derkum-Porsche 911 RSR 3.0 (1974).
When Nyström could not participate in the race due to a technical problem, Info Zeitz took over the pole position. Followed by Wolfgang Schachinger (A) and Dieter Tögel (D) – tow fast BMW CSL-pilots. Schachinger’s “Batmobile” is a racing car that belonged originally to the Belgian “Luigi Racing” and which still has the paintwork of those days. Tögel’s 3,5 CSL is the former Schnitzer-car which had been driven by Dieter Quester and Albrecht Krebs.
The Group-4 Sportscars were permitted to participate for the first time in a
FIA-GTC-TC’76 race. Dr. Armin Zumtobel (A) in a Porsche 906 (1966) pushed himself forward position for position from the sixth row. He managed to secure a second place in the overall classification. Only Ingo Zeitz was not to be held back and he won with a 8,4 second lead before Zumtobel and Schachinger.
Carlos Cruz (P) in a Alfa Romeo GTAm secured the position as third-fastest Touring Cars pilot behind Schachinger and Tögel but before Roberto Panarotto (I) in his Trivellato-Fiat 128 Coupe (1972). Claus Damgaard (DK) in a spectacular De Tomaso Pantera was unlucky though in comparison. Though fourth in the Qualifying, he achieved the fastest lap time in the elfth round. But in the end he only came in 21st. due to problems handling the difficult GT whereas his team colleague Henrik Lindberg (DK) with a second De Tomaso Pantera had to retire during the second half of the race. Dr. Helmut Stein (D) also had terrible luck in his home race. In the last round, he had to retire with his with his ex-Obermoser/Wooding Ford Escort RS (1971).
