Compte rendu 2005/ 03 Misano
Il grande Clay could only watch
“Whoever was not there, just missed out,” the Series Coordinator said. The FIA Historic Series for GT and Touring Cars travelled to the Autodromo Santamonica in Mizano at the Italien Adria Coast for the second event of the season. The only Italien race course owned privately is about 20 kilometres south of Rimini. Unique in every way – there is a swimming pool in the drivers’ paddock !!
Besides the lovely ambience, the 4,06 kilometre-long race course driven anti-clockwise, offers the ideal conditions for good motorsport. The first showpiece of the race course inaugrated in 1972 was the race for the Formula-2 European Championship held from 1977 onwards. One year later, it was joined by the San Marino Formula-3 Grand Prix. In the same year the Automobile World Championships take place in Mizano. The champions of the 6-Hour-Race were Bob Wollek and Henri Pescarolo in a Porsche 935.
The race course fell into a deep sleep internationally after the end of the Formula-2 European Championship in 1984. The FIA Historic Series created a revival in the race course popular in Italy. The Porsche 911 Carrera RSR dominated the scene in the FIA-GTC-TC’76. But like in the season’s prelude event in Hockenheim, Patrick Gerling (CH) controlled the scene in a Chevrolet Corvette C3 of the Malibu Racing Team.
He won the race narrowly before Dr. Armin Zumtobel (A) in a Porsche 906 and Peter Richrath (D) in the fastest RSR. Followed by the fastest Italien M. Colajanni in another Porsche Carrera. The fastest Touring Car pilot was Tibor Molnar (D) in a Ford Escort RS out of the collection of Dr. Helmut Stein (D). The Langenfelder however had to retire himself. He had to park his Ex-Wooding-Escort, which had been driven by Jörg Obermoser in the Seventies, after only 6 rounds.
Despite the absence of Hendrik Lindberg and Claus Damgaard, three De Tomaso Panteras started in the race. The Mantovani / Nicodemi Team was the fastest of the trio and attained the 6th. position.
The FIA-TC’65 race developed into a real thriller. The Champion Dieter-Karl Anton (A) in an Alfa Romeo GTA and the Ford-Falcon Team of Leo Voyazides and John Young (both GB) fought fiercely for the lead in the overall classification during nearly the whole 1-Hour race. However in the end phase, Voyazides allowed himself to be driven into an act which meant the end for him and which shoved Anton into a spin. But the FIA-TC’65 defending champion could drive on and won with more than a minute’s lead over Bo Warmenius / Gunnar Turebrand in a Ford Lotus Cortina. Followed by E. Spaggiari (I) in a Ford Mustang, the fastest driver of the higher classes of over 2500 cubic capacity.
A lot of very interesting cars of Italien origin started in the FIA-TC’65. Along with the Fiat Abarth 1000 of Andrea and Francesco Tessaro as well as the Alfa Romeo 1900 Berlina of Francesco Capuzzo, there was also a Fiat 2300 S Coupé, with which the Maranelli / Tenconi Team won in their class.
Ex-Formula-1 pilot Clay Regazzoni (MC) had to watch all this from the sidelines. Due to a technical defect during the training session, his Ford Mustang could not start in the race.
In the FIA-GTC’65 race, there was no getting pass David Methley. The Brit won both races in his Marcos 1800 GT before Sean Walker (GB) in his “Gold Bug” Lotus Elan 26 R. In the first race, the Italien team Benedini / Benedini in a Jaguar E-Type made up the trio on the podium together with the British GTs. In the second race, Hans-Jürgen Malsbenden achieved the 3rd. position in his open Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray. Last year’s champion, Bo Warmenius had to make do with the 2nd. Position in his class in both races.
The Lotus Elite drivers provided for spectacular fights. Both cars of the Raimondi Team as well as F. Vanni put on a thrilling fight for the lead in the class in the second race. In the end, the faster of the two Raimondi cars managed to achieve the victory before F. Vanni.
Next event: 01st.-03rd. July 2005 in Zolder (B)
