Rapport 2003 / 06 Nürburgring
6th. Event FIA-TC’76: 32nd. AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix Nürburgring
Furiani the Fourth
For the Italien Alex Furiani living near Cologne, the FIA-TC’65 Event at the Nürburgring is something like a home race. The 37-year-old has taken advantage of this already three times and won the One-Hour-Race at the 32nd. AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix with his Alfa Romeo GTA (1965) yet again. This year though the “Italien-Rhinelander” started solo for the first time.
Even during the time practice, it was clear that this would be an extremely thrilling race. Although Max Rostron/Ulf Larsson (GB/S) started off with their Ford Mustang (1965) for the pole position, even in their fastest round they only had a 0,35 second lead over Furiani. Behind them they were followed by the father and son team, Helge and Henry Snabb (FIN) in a Ford Falcon Sprint (1964), one of the busiest teams during the Qualifying. The Championship leader Dieter-Karl Anton (A) came in fourth in a Alfa Romeo GTA (1965), just 1,5 seconds behind his direct rival Alex Furiani.
In the race itself, the fastest in the Qualifying Rostron/Larsson asserted their leadership initially and even drove the fastest lap time. But technical problems threw them back towards the end of the field. The Ford-Falcon-teams Snabb/Snabb and Andy Bacon/Leo Voyazides (both GB) who started out of the third row showed a strong performance. But in the end they had to give way to Alex Furiani who made his fourth win in series perfect with an exciting final spurt.
The Snabbs crossed the finishing line 1,7 seconds later just before the Gustavssons, another father-and-son team in a Ford Lotus Cortina (1964) who achieved a second place in their class. Dieter-Karl Anton lacked just 2,2 seconds and was followed closely by Bacon/Voyazides. The third place in the larger classes over 2,5 litre cubic capacity went to Reinhold Gröpper the former DTM private driver and Mustang-specialist from Paderborn.
Bo Warmenius and Gunnar Turebrand in their Ford Lotus Cortina (1963) faced pure bad luck. During his stint, Warmenius got into difficulties with a Ford Mustang. They lost over 3 minutes due to repair work needed to be made in the box, therefore remaining one lap behind and had to make do with sixth place in their class amongst the FIA-TC’65 starters.
The race for the older cars built up to 1961 was won yet again by the Scuderia members, Marco Rossi and Marco Cajani. They won the duel of the Squadra Giulietta Berlinetta for the sixth time and collected full points for the FIA-TC’65 classification table.
In the class up to 2,5 litres cubic capacity, the Dutch guest starter Frans van Maarschalkerwaart and the young Jasper Izaks in their BMW 1800 TI (1964) won before Dominik Roschmann (D) in the same BMW model. The 19 year old German participated in his first FIA-TC’65 race. Allen Tice/Ian Cox (both GB) in a Mini Cooper S (1964) won in the 1,3 litre class followed closely by ex-Champion Dieter Dahlemann (D) in a small 1071 Cooper S which was the weakest cubic capacity class. He won before Graziano and Andrea Tessaro (I) in a Fiat Abarth 100 (1962) and Kristen Wigren (both S) in a Saab 96 Sport.
