The fastest in training, Mikael and Calle Gustavsson (S) in a Ford Lotus Cortina ended the 3rd. event of the FIA-TC’65 with an overall win in this season. The father-and-son team celebrated their 2nd. overall win in the FIA European Challenge for Historic Touring Cars. As usual the son started off and had to first give way to John Young (GB) who stormed forward in a Ford Falcon Sprint. But the V8-engine of the Touring Car which wore the colours of the Alan Mann Racing Team, was not running smoothly even in the first half of the race and Young fell back.
From then on, Gustavsson / Gustavsson and the title defender Dieter-Karl Anton (A) in a Alfa Romeo GTA set the pace. The Austrian individual fighter demonstrated as usual maximum commitment at the steering wheel but could not overcome the Ford Lotus Cortina of the Swedes. “You stand under a great deal of pressure as a leader in a race,” Mikael Gustavsson confessed after the 1-Hour-Race in the smouldering heat in Zolder. His father, Carl added, “I knew that I was the slowest of the leading trio.” The team was still leading when his handed the Cortina over. “There was a great deal of pressure on me to defend the lead right up to the finishing line,” said Gustavsson.

He solved the problem and crossed the finishing line with a lead of 11 seconds. Dieter-Karl Anton did his best to secure the full amount of points and the overall win after all and climbed out of his GTA completely exhausted. With a deficit of 1,40 minutes, the 3rd. position went to Ex-Champion Bo Warmenius / Gunnar Turebrand (S) in another Ford Lotus Cortina. Ian Cox and Allen Tice (GB) crossed the finishing line in the only Mini Cooper S a full lap later.
Since all the other starters in the large class had to give up due to technical problems, Erwin Derichs / Manfred Kubik (D/A) could celebrate capacity class win in their Ford Mustang. By following their motto “If you want to finish first, you first have to finish” they were just right on the track of Zolder.
