He is a real “original” of this Championship. He is not only a fast but also a fair sportsman with his Alfa Romeo GTA. After another class win in the finals held on the former Formula-One Course in Dijon-Prenois, Dieter-Karl Anton (A) at once made his way to his fellow rival, Calle Gustavsson (S). “He drove superbly,” the Austrian called out in his Austrian dialect to the whole company. His Swedish rival seemed to understand the “Austrian acknowledgement” even without any alpine language knowledge. Anton was saved by only a 1,2-second lead from the Ford Lotus Cortina of the “father-and-son” team, Gustavsson when he crossed the finishing line.
“In the end, my tyres were completely destroyed,” he reported. The thoroughbred-racing driver could defend the Championship title for Touring Cars built up to 1965 (FIA-TC’65) with another class win. With his Alfa Romeo GTA, he presented his Touring Car model the most wonderful birthday present. Then the successful GTA would turn 40 years old this year.
The overall win in the FIA-TC’65 finals in Burgundy was secured by Leo Voyazides (GB) and John Young (GB) in their Ford Falcon Sprint. “Everything went off very smoothly for us,” Young, the starting driver said as he summarized the 1-Hour-Race. “It was a bit crowded at the start but I could hand over the car to Leo with a good lead”. Voyazides crossed the finishing line with a 30-second lead. The second in the class, Fritz Vogel (CH) and Beat Müller (CH) came in one minute later with their Ford Falcon Sprint. The Swiss secured the fourth overall position. The former Champion team, Bo Warmenius (S)/ Gunnar Turebrand (S) crossed the finishing line with their Ford Lotus Cortina in the sixth position after Peter Dunn (GB) / Richard Styles (GB) in a Ford Mustang.
