FIA-GTC-TC’76: Victory due to a good knowledge of the course

„“I know this track very well,” Patrick Gerling said after his victory in the finals of the FIA-GTC-TC’76 Championship held on the former Formula-One course of Dijon. The Swiss laid down the standard of the course in Burgundy as well with Chevrolet Corvette C3 of the Malibu Racing Team. He did not even have to play out his cards for the pole position: “I knew that I could still draw on my reserves.”
But in the end, Gerling was only 2,8 seconds ahead of Dr Armin Zumtobel in his Porsche 906. “I had problems with the air pressure in the tyres,” said Gerling, who secured the Championship title for GT cars built up to 1976 (FIA-GTC’76).
Wolfgang Schachinger (A) in a BMW 3.0 CSL fought fiercely for the third overall position. He put up a thrilling fight with Peter Richrath (D) in a Porsche Carrera RSR for this position. But Richrath braked himself out in the second last lap and went into a spin. Although he could drive on, he had to give up one round before the finishing line due to tyre defects after the “highspeed-spin”.
Nevertheless, Schachinger was unable to defend his title. The Championship title was won by Dr Helmut Stein (D), who came in as the overall sixth with his Ford Escort RS, thereby winning in his cubic capacity class.
