Rapporto 2005/ 05 Anderstorp

The Anderstorp racing track became famous at the height of the Swedish motorsport boom. The memory of these great times is connected to Ronnie Peterson, who had even won the first Grand Prix of Sweden in 1973 in a Lotus 72-Ford. The dream of a victory at the local Grand Prix was ended by a faulty tyre. On the whole 6 Formula One races were held on the racing course which is about 160 kilometres southeast of Göteborg. The last Swedish Grand Prix took place in 1978. Niki Lauda won in a Brabham-Alfa Romeo “vacuum cleaner” (Fan-Car).

In the mid-90’s, the FIA-GT Series were held here twice and 3 years ago, the GT-Series with the Touring Cars European Championship also took place here. Now the Scandinavian Raceway which was inaugurated in 1968 is facing an upheaval. It is uncertain as to whether and even how things will go on in Anderstorp. “The Historic European Championships of the FIA-GTC and FIA-TC end the story of a historic racing course,” says Ronny G. Bredhauer, the Coordinator of the FIA European Championship for historic GT and Touring Cars.

The predecessors of the modern FIA-GT Championship and the FIA World Championship for Touring Cars, started for the first time on the former Swedish Formula One course. Nine Lotus Elan drivers altogether started in the FIA-GTC’65 depicting not only largest group in the two races on the 4,025 kilometre course, they also ensured thrilling races and came up with a winner each time in both races.

In first race, the defending champion Bo Warmenius (S) was just narrowly one step ahead of his fellow countryman Rolf Nilsson. In his native country of all places, Warmenius got problems with the temperature of his Lotus-4cyclinder in the second race and fell back to the 6th. position of his class.

In the class over 2500 cubic capacity, Wolfgang Schachinger (A) in his Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray maintained the upper hand in both races over the Championship leader Hans-Jürgen Malsbenden (D) in his open Corvette. In the second race the German just narrowly missed the jump to the podium. Dr. Armin Zumtobel (A) managed to push his way through to the 3rd. position with his Porsche 911. Erwin Derichs showed off his Jaguar E-Type for the first time in the FIA-GTC’65 and secured the 10th. and 11th. positions each time.

In the FIA-TC’65 there was a repeat of the exciting duel between Leo Voyazides/John Young (both GB) in a Ford Falcon and the defending Champion Dieter-Karl Anton (A) in his Alfa Romeo GTA. In the One-Hour race, the Austrian fought aggressively in his usual individual drive and could keep up with the fast British Falcon.

But then the fifth gear failed and the former Austrian Formula 2 Champion had to allow the overall winner to past by. He narrowly defended the second overall position though before Nigel Vaulkhard/John Smirthwaite with their Ford Mustang. Dieter-Karl Anton could secure the points for the class win though because Mikael Gustavsson (S) was stuck in the gravel bed for a long time with his Ford Lotus Cortina and Gunnar Turebrand/Bo Warmenius were struggling with technical problems. At least the ex-Master Team secured the fastest race lap time on their home course.

In the FIA-GTC-TC’76, it was again Patrick Gerling with his quick as lightning Chevrolet Corvette C3 who set the pace. The Swiss achieved not only the fastest lap time but also with a sovereign 40 second lead in the overall class. Followed by the fastest Touring Cars with defending champion Wolfgang Schachinger (A) in a BMW 3,5 CSL, Nigel Vaulkhard (GB) in a Ford Escort TC and Dr. Helmut Stein (D) in his ex-Obermoser-Ford Escort RS and then guest starter Jonas Nylen (S) with his Opel Commodore B.

Nylens fastest countryman and Opel colleague, Jurg Bächi attained the second fastest but did not manage to cross the finishing line along with Tibor Mohar (D) in another Ford Escort RS. Peter Richrath (D) defended the honour of the Porsche Carrera RSR which are otherwise usually numerously represented. With his 6th. overall , he reached the 2nd. position in the class before Gunnar Turebrand in his Mini Marcos and Axel Ekman in a Volvo PV 544 with a 2 litre engine.
