Falcon Chase
For the first time in this season, the Touring Cars of the FIA-TC’65 started off in two 30-minute races instead of in a one-hour race with a pit Stopp. In both races, the Ford Falcon of Leo Voyazides and Andy Bacon (both GB), painted in the classical colours of red and gold of the legendary team leader Alan Mann, crossed the finishing line first. “We have been able to cope very well with the Falcon here in Spa,” declared a joyful Leo Voyazides. “Our car is just perfectly well-balanced.”
In both races, the duo Voyazides/Bacon could keep the fast Alfa Romeo GTA of Alex Furiani (Frechen) and the FIA-TC’65 Leader, Dieter-Karl Anton (A) at bay as well as the fastest Ford Lotus Cortina of Mikael Gustavsson (S), who achieved a third place in the overall ratings. In the first race, Anton had bad luck when a hose burst and he was showered with gearbox oil. He crossed the finishing line before Bo Warmenius just in the nick of time. Only then did the fastest Ford Mustang driven by Richard Styles and Peter Dunn reach the finish.
In the class up to 1,3 litres, Niklas Johansson (S) in a Mini Cooper S crossed the finishing line as the fastest driver before Allen Tice. The “Scuderia- Marios” with the surnames Rossi and Cajani secured the class win once again in their Alfa Romeo Giulietta for cars up to 1961. The four Giuliettas of the Scuderia del Portello have become a fixture of the FIA-TC’65.
Cajani and Co donated an elegant prize for the best Alfa Romeo GTA-driver, in remembrance of the former Scuderia boss, who had been killed in an accident in a GTA in Spa ten years ago. This award was won by Alex Furiani, who asserted himself over Dieter-Karl Anton by a mere 5,5 second-lead in the second race.
By achieving the fourth overall position, Nigel Vaulkhard/John Smirthwaite (both GB) in a Ford Mustang secured the second place in the class. Carl Gustavsson (S) won the rank of being the best Ford Lotus Cortina-pilot before Chris Sander (GB) and Gunnar Turebrand (S). Ian Cox (GB) won with his Mini Cooper S in the 1,3 litre class before Niklas Johansson.
